~ Usability, whats that again? ~
|
Ever heard someone say.. "I donīt get it, I must be stupid" This is probobly what you say when you donīt understand things, right? Now who wants to feel stupid?? I know I donīt! Make your visitors feel smart not stupid!
Usability, usability, usability, and Iīll say it just once more.. usability!
This is the most important thing you should worry about when building your website. Your visitors
must know where they are, why they are there, and what they are able to do to in there.
You see this fancy flash navigation bar! *yeeaaay* I want that one, how cool! you think and go on downloading codes for it...
Well, it might be cool, but will your visitors understand what to do with it? If yes, then sure go ahead, get your cool navigation bar!
But if not, think again. How would you feel if you surfed in on a site where you only got confused and didnīt understand
what to do? You would probably point at that big scary and never come back again. Now we donīt want your
visitors to do that. We want them to stay, we want them to hang around for a while, and we want them to come back!
So what should you do?
Well, imagine that all your visiors are using the internet for the first time ever, heck they just pushed the on button on the computer
for the first time. Yepp, a complete newbee, how can you build your website so that this newbee doesnt have to feel stupid
visiting you? With one word, consistent. Be consistant. If you want your links to be purple, then make them purple, on your whole site.
You visitor will learn immediately that if they press the purple words something will happen, and they will look for the purple words. If the purple words suddenly
turns yellow, your visitor might miss the link and get lost or stuck at your site, be confused and once again point at that big scary
Make your navigation understandable. Your visitors doesnīt like surprises, they want to know where they are going to when
they click something. Donīt give your links confusing nicknames, again, your visitors wants to know what they are clicking on.
A good idea is to think your site over long and hard, then make a sketch on paper of how you want it to be,
then you can sit down and build your site.
Good luck!
